Universal
Poncho
This
is a simple poncho pattern than can be adapted to any size person.
Essentially, it's two knitted rectangles of equal size that are sewn together. See the schematic
photo below to estimate the size of your rectangles and for instructions.
YOU WILL NEED:
YELLOW 41-peg (adult)
or GREEN 36-peg loom (child)
or RED 31-peg loom (toddler)
or BLUE 24-peg loom (baby)
Pick and darning needle
Amount of yarn will vary greatly with poncho size, anywhere from
4 to 30 oz (200-850g), ranging from a baby to a large adult.
GAUGE/SIZE
To estimate the gauge (stitches per inch) of your knitting, make a square
sample swatch of 10 pegs wide, on the same loom and with the same yarn you'll be using for
your poncho. Now measure the width of your swatch. Divide 10 by the
width, and this is your gauge. For example, I knit a 5-inch wide
swatch. 10 stitches (pegs) divided by 5 (inches) equals 2 stitches
per inch. Now multiple this gauge number times the desired arm length of
your poncho. For example, I want it 20 inches long. 20 times 2
equals 40, so I will make both rectangles 40 pegs wide.
FINISHING
When sewing pieces together, you'll match stitches to rows. In most knitting, the ratio is
approximately 2 stitches for every 3 rows. In order to keep your seams
flat, you'll need to sew in that same ratio. For example, for every 2
stitches you sew on the bind-off edge, you'll sew 3 stitches from the side edge.
If desired, crochet
around the neckline and on the bottom, and/or add some fringe and beads.
